Degree Requirements

Non Finance Specialization

Students must complete all of the following requirements:

Core Requirements

  • BUS 980 – Theory Development in Business Administration (4)
  • BUS 981 – Research Methods in Business Administration (4)
  • BUS 982 – Dissertation Development Workshop (4)

Research Methods Requirements

Examples include Quantitative and/or Qualitative Research Methods, Multivariate Methods, and Experimental Design. A minimum of three research methods courses must be completed in the first five terms. The student’s supervisor can add to, or substitute, methods courses in consultation with the Academic Director of the PhD program.

Interdisciplinary Requirements

A minimum of two Breadth/interdisciplinary courses selected from:

  • BUS 961 – Selected Topics in Innovation (4)
  • BUS 962 – Selected Topics in Globalization/Emerging Markets (4)
  • BUS 963 – Selected Topics in Capital/Risk Management (4)
  • BUS 964 – Selected Topics in Sustainability (4)

Disciplinary Requirements

A minimum of three specialization/disciplinary courses selected by the senior supervisor in consultation with the student’s supervisory committee and the Academic Director of the PhD program. These courses can include directed studies courses, special topics, as well as approved graduate courses in other departments or universities. At least two courses should be completed at Simon Fraser University.

  • BUS 991 – PhD Comprehensive Exam (6)
  • BUS 992 – PhD Thesis (6)
  • BUS 993 – Thesis Proposal (6)

Finance Specialization

The course requirements consist of a minimum of 9 approved graduate courses selected by the senior supervisor and the doctoral candidate’s committee to create a curriculum which will be flexible within certain limits.

Finance PhD students must complete all of the following requirements:

Core Requirements

  • ECON 803 – Microeconomic Theory II (4)
  • ECON 815 – Financial Economics (4)
  • ECON 837 – Econometric Theory I (4)

Research Methods Requirements

Examples include Empirical Methods in Finance, Advanced Topics in Empirical Asset Pricing, Topics in Econometrics, Applied Econometrics, and Advanced Monetary Economics. . A minimum of three research methods courses must be completed in the first five terms. Accounting Specialization (Financial Accounting Stream)

The course requirements consist of a minimum of 9 approved graduate courses selected by the senior supervisor and the doctoral candidate’s committee to create a curriculum which will be flexible within certain limits.

Accounting PhD students must complete all of the following requirements:

Core Requirements

  • ECON 803 – Microeconomic Theory II (4)
  • ECON 815 – Financial Economics (4)
  • ECON 837 – Econometric Theory I (4)

Or three graduate level ECON/Finance courses selected by the senior supervisor.
