Canada’s health insurance system is set up to respond to people’s need for health care rather than their ability to pay for it. Often referred to as Medicare, the system is designed to make sure that all residents of Canada have reasonable access to health care from doctors and hospitals. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomers/after-health.asp

There are two types of medical insurance for international students:

  • Primary Medical Insurance = Covers doctor/hospital visits, tests, offered by BC Medical Services Plan (MSP)/BC Services card
  • Secondary Medical Insurance = Supplementary health and dental coverage (dental, eyeglasses, massage therapy, prescription drugs and more), offered by private health insurance companies

All international students will be enrolled in a mandatory four month primary International Medical Insurance plan and the plan fee will be automatically included in their tuition fees. Please visit:

Banking

Opening a Bank Account

Most banks in Canada offer options/discounts to students for opening a bank account. To open a bank account in Canada, as an international graduate student you will need:

  • A valid passport
  • Your SFU Student ID Card
  • Proof of registration at SFU
  • Canadian home address (a phone bill, a rental agreement contract)
  • Your study permit
