In May, the first ever Beedie Opportunity Quest saw SFU's MBA students engage with local businesses in Vancouver's West Hastings Street area in order to help revitalize commercial activity in the area. The event was pioneered by Professor Eric Gedajlovic through a partnership with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association (DVBIA). Before hitting the streets, the students were briefed by Professor Gedajlovic and Ivy Fong, Member Services and Projects Officer, DVBIA, on the retail challenges and opportunities facing the area, and what their expectations of the students were. The cohort of 52 students was split into 12 teams, who were then given two hours to work on their recommendations before presenting to a panel of industry judges. "We wanted the students to tell us what it would take to make West Hastings Street more vibrant," said Ivy Fong. "The quality and variety of recommendations the students presented has been impressive and is testament to the education they received at SFU. They have certainly given us a lot to think about today and hopefully we will see some of their ideas put into practice in the future."
