Growing up in an entrepreneurial family, recent Beedie School of Business BBA graduate Tiffanie Lai has long had a taste for entrepreneurship – and the experience she gained during her time at Beedie only served to nurture her passion.

Lai has experienced the full gamut of opportunities the Beedie School offers students, including case competitions, exchanges, and co-op placements.

In addition to a semester on exchange at the National Taiwan University, Lai travelled to many different countries for case competitions, including as far afield as Thailand. The competitions honed many of her business skills, from accountancy to ethics, even asking her to forecast the future of business, and she can boast several top three competition finishes.

She carried her passion for entrepreneurship into the SFU JDC West team, twice finishing in the top four in the entrepreneurship competition, and has since taken on a coaching role with the current SFU team.

“The element of camaraderie, teamwork and school pride JDC West instills is unbelievable,” she says. “Training with a group of students for five months then demonstrating your business acumen on the floor is incredible.”

Lai took on internship roles on two occasions, firstly with the BC Public Service, and then with tech startup A Thinking Ape – with the latter leading to a full-time HR position with the company.

“I definitely experienced working environments at opposite ends of the spectrum,” she says. “The tech startup environment was completely different to that of the government agency, and being exposed to both gave me experience of two completely different ecosystems.”

Not content with waiting for opportunities to come to her, Lai set out to create some of her own, and along with fellow Beedie student Stephanie Wong, helped found the SFU chapter of Young Women in Business (YWiB), a non-profit society for emerging female leaders in Western Canada.

“Founding YWiB is battling it out with JDC West for my best Beedie moment,” says Lai. “I wouldn’t be the professional I am today without the Beedie School of Business – it was a life-changing experience.”
